HiEPA algal oil ™ is a natural omega 3 algal oil made from Schizochytrium algae with a minimum of 300mg EPA per gram of oil, as well as 200mg DHA. The algae are fermented, harvested and extracted (solvent-free) to yield an oil that is consequently winterized and refined.
It is stabilized with natural tocopherols and is used as an input for our Vegan Soft Gels and liquid formulations.

Yes, we know, some suppliers have started to offer algal oil EPA concentrates, as regularly done in fish oil industry, but these are man-made products using different enzymatic, chemical and distillation processes that alter the molecule structure (so called sn-positions). This means the oil is no longer natural and at the same time it decreases bioavailability!
Obviously, at Lus Health we don’t believe concentrates are the way to go, because we believe in natural products. Products like HiEPA™ algal oil!
Eicosapentanoic acid (EPA) is probably the best researched omega 3 fatty acid, which is very much linked to research on fish oil that started in the last century. Fish oil is generally high(er) in EPA than DHA, which draws extra attention on that fatty acid.
Biochemically, EPA can be converted to a specific type of eicosanoid, hormone-like molecules that can help reduce inflammation. Therefore, EPA is believed to help in the prevention of inflammation-based disease states like cardiovascular disease and carpel tunnel syndrome. Recent research, however, has also linked high intakes of EPA to reduction of depression, and thereby improving mood.

You have been on the lookout for algal oil with EPA ever since the first algal omega products hit the market. Though you have been an early adaptor on sustainable omega 3, communication on specific health targets felt unsure with only high DHA options.

In HiEPA algal oil there is 550mg/g of EPA & DHA, whereas in the most common fish oil (anchovy) this is 280mg/g. Anchovy has about 3% oil. So to create 1 kg of 280mg EPA & DHA you need 33kg of fish. To then get to 480mg you take a factor of 480/280 = 1,9. 33kg x 1,7 = 64kg of fish.
This stand for Total Oxidation Value which is measured by 2 x peroxide value and 1 x para-anasidine value.

It is a fatty acid just like DHA linked to benefits that fish oil has. Up until now, getting a algal oil with High EPA levels was difficult. With this new raw material there is an opportunity to focus on specific health areas

As algae are grown in a closed environment, no pollutants get into the product. The oil is safe and is only refined lightly to remove oxidation products.
The algae, schizochytrium, are grown in fermentation vessels until maturity. Once a batch is done, it is treated with enzymes to release the oil which is then separated and lightly refined until put in their final container.
